KMG Fireball incident @ Ohio State Fair

Not sure if anyone heard yet or not, but was sad to hear about this.  FWIW, there is a video on YouTube showing the accident.  It's pretty graphic, so I won't link to it here (I honestly expect YouTube might remove it), but it shows one of the entire carriers detaching from the ride on the upswing, crashing into the opposing carrier (knocking two people out of their seats), and then landing separately away from the ride.  Pretty sad!

It's terrible. The news says 7 hurt, one dead. From what I've seen, if all of the other 7 survive it's a miracle.
Rename Roller Coaster to 'Lagoon's Classic Roller Coaster'
  • A distinct name
  • Adjective + Roller Coaster format everybody uses (white roller coaster, wooden roller coaster, etc.)
  • Describes the ride
  • Includes the current name

I always worry about carnival rides. They are set up / taken down way too much. I prefer riding at established parks like Lagoon.

So sad.

Did you guys hear about the small plane crash yesterday? It exploded on impact near Riverdale on I-15 NB. The NB lane was majorly delayed yesterday / also causing subsequent delays on secondary roads.

Not only heard about it, but heard it personally:  it went down less than a quarter mile from my apartment. Was heartbreaking to see. Frown

KMG has an Excellent Safety Record, as does Amusements of America. As has been reported, the ride was Inspected by A of A, The State of Ohio Department of Agriculture Ride Safety Division, and a 3rd Party Ride Safety Inspector (which I believe is R.C. Fussner's Company, RC Fussner & Associates) after assembly and being certified to operate. That means this ride went through the same inspections as Lagoon's Rides do each year. I've been on a couple KMG Rides, including a Speed, Fireball/Chance Revolution, and Freak Out. Never once did I feel unsafe, and 2 of those were Transportable.

This is a photo of where the Gondola suffered a catastrophic structural failure: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSpMlrEtnh8/W...00/las.jpg and the Source, with a very good write up: http://www.parkscope.net/2017/07/what-we...r.html?m=1

KMG Fireball Inspections for the ride in Question: http://www.10tv.com/sites/10tv.com/files/Fireball.pdf

Here's a nice "Hit Piece" by a Cleveland ABC Affiliate...one that doesn't describe that a Service Bullitin from years ago, and for a swing arm and restraints, are in no way related to this incident, including the headline. SMDH

Another "Hit Piece," this time from a "Former Employee." Whether it's the writer or "former employee," the story is obviously lacking any actual information and is nothing but utter crap.

Sid, awesome article from Parkscope; thanks a ton for that link. Really interesting reading & photos, especially the one showing where the break occurred up close. Will be interesting to find out how recently the ride underwent NDT for sure. Stuff of nightmares, man...

RC Fussner... boy, that name sounds darned familiar. Was he previously associated with Lagoon directly? I swear I've heard that name before.

The Last NDT, which I linked to (Inspection Reports), was October 25th, 2016.

R.C. Fussner, whom started his career at Kings Island, is indeed on Lagoon's Payroll, and the long time Loss Prevention Manager and over Safety and Security. He and his Son own and operate RC Fussner & Associates. RC is regarded as one of, if not THE top industry safety expert in the world.
